This photograph
was taken in early January 2003. Ask Igor Glenn to pose for a photo
on the deck and he's up the tree before you know it (singing "Back in the Saddle
Again," by the way). Big John Cieslak (saxaphone,
clarinet, flute) is on the left and Mark Meschino (trumpet
and sound effects) is on the right.
Although
the trio made wonderful music that weekend, they are only a fraction
of the entire group known as Igor's Jazz Cowboys, who travel to jazz
festivals everywhere and dazzle audiences with their very unique music. You
can learn more about this group at www.igorsjazzcowboys.com.
Igor's shows
are always fun and lively, with a few serious moments. And they usually
include his song, "Senior
Moment," a tribute to everyone who forgets things in the aging
process.
Igor and Dolan's friendship dates back
to pre-New Christy Minstrels days, when Igor was Dolan's bass man. Igor
followed in Dolan's footsteps as a Christy, about 8 years later (1969-1971). Just
before his January 2003 appearance at the AFP, Igor had been part of a big
PBS special called "This Land is Your Land." He
was part of Randy Sparks and the Minstrels, he played bass for Barry McGuire
for "Eve of Destruction," and he was part of the big finale
at the end of the show.
An unusual claim to fame: Igor is the
only three-time winner of the Gong Show. For those who aren't old enough
to remember, it was a TV show with panelists who would hit a gong when an
act became unbearable--and there were a lot of really bad acts on the show. Igor's
song for the show was "Motorcycle Mama." He repeated
the act at the AFP, actually "riding" his bass for a period of time.
The shows that weekend in January included
a radio program, complete with sound and lighting effects, called "Big Red
Lightbulb." Igor sang vintage songs of several decades and recited
news of each era as well. His four-octave range gives him wonderful
vocal abilities. During the second half of the shows, Igor and Dolan
sang New Christy Minsrels songs.
