This photograph was taken on the Sunday
after Thanksgiving, 2001. Dolan had elbow surgery the previous Monday
and was not ready to play his guitar. But he did sing a beautiful a
cappella rendition of "Cowboy's Prayer."
The rest of the group were not really
impaired, but the gag was nevertheless a funny one. Jim Koweek is leading
the others through the door, with Rusty Harper and Slim Harper following
close behind.
Jim
Koweek claims he's in the group to help his older partners with their
memories. He's just being modest, though, because he is a fine musician.
Jim's day job is owner and manager of the Diamond
JK Nursery in Sonoita,
Arizona (for anyone who doesn't know Arizona geography, Sonoita is a lovely
little town between Tucson and Sierra Vista, with rolling hills that are
quite unusual for Arizona). The nursery's Web site is full of great
photographs of those hills as well as the plants the nursery sells.
Rocky and Slim Harper are brothers. Both
got their start as musicians when they were often too young to be on stage
because of liquor laws, so they would be placed somewhere off to the side. From
those early days in Kentucky, Rocky took the bluegrass route and Slim the
classic country, playing for several years with George Jones.
These days, Rocky plays guitar and sings
lead, and tells one-liners, one right after another, keeping the audience
in stitches. Slim plays a great pedal steel guitar, and has an
expressive face that is really fun to watch.
