Magic Mountain

(This song description was provided by Dr. Lloyd Duvall, President, Sierra Vista Symphony, as written in the program notes for Dolan's appearance with the Symphony on April 15, 2005)

Mr. Ellis described the composition of this song as follows:

“These days I often find myself very concerned for the future of our nation and all of us, as we daily teach ourselves to live a faster and faster pace. I see so many of the real beauties of life slip past so many of us as we race forward to find happiness in our ‘things’ and our ‘possessions.’ It seems to me that we as a nation have actually reached the point where we think of ourselves as ‘lazy’ if we not completely overloaded with work, projects and responsibilities. We seem to thrive on it and brag about how busy we are, as if to tell the world (and ourselves) how important we are. Well, it sure is something to think about, isn’t it?”

“Magic Mountain was written around a campfire in the desert at sunset. I was on a remote hilltop looking east toward the majestic Four Peaks about thirty miles outside Phoenix. On that evening, these sacred peaks were bathed with incredible pastel colors of salmon, purple, gold and magenta. As I quietly became engulfed in their awesome beauty, the mountain seemed to draw me in and hold me. I sometimes wonder where the words and music of my songs really come from. It’s true, I wrote this song in about twenty minutes, but somehow, I don’t feel very much like the composer.”
